And holy hot damn, the world is suddenly something different

Now I go to sleep feeling fulfilled

Wake up with purpose

Throughout the day I’m hopeful

And honestly I still put the children first

Distance…

Allowed me to realize what I was missing:

Your smile, your Black woman style, your sound,

your honesty, your loyalty, your royalty.

Distance…

Allowed me to miss you while working on my issues.

Allowed me to let go and let growth in.

Your presence is a present wrapped in rich brown skin that houses your essence.

Your flagrance is Rosemary.

Your beauty is Cherry Blossom trees.

Your magic is Cuba’s coral riffs.

Your strength is Oak.

Your sensitivity it’s leaves.

You are many things:

A hoe and a Queen,

The straightforwardness of the Sun,

The mystery of the Moon.

You are India’s monsoon.

The melting ice of Mount Kilimanjaro that give the Nile life.

You are the distance that allowed us to become more intimate.

Thank you for reading,

Now tilted in prayer, humbled by the river
A light brown child
Being baptized in the Blue Nile
Protected from the jinn by crocodiles
The child’s spiritual birth
Life emerging from Mother Earth.

We gather on the edge of the Blue Nile bare feet
Side by side holding hands
Alternating between women and men
White gowns contrasting off different shades of brown
Our feet sinks into the wet ground
Nobody makes a sound
As the priest sprinkle the river’s water on the baby head and feet

Here….

History speaks.
A light brown child
Being baptized in the Blue Nile
Protected from the jinn by crocodiles
The child’s spiritual birth
Life emerging from Mother Earth
